a. Focus of voltage trace:
Well, do you want to see a dot on the screen or a fuzzy blob ?
b. Intensity of voltage trace:
How bright a dot do you want to see ? Too brigth and the dot will swell, and possibly burn the phosphor on the tube.
c. Vertical and horizontal position controls:
Allow you to put the trace in the middle of the screen so you can get a good look at it, not have it run off the screen
d. Vertical sensitivity:
Adjusts the size of the trace on the screen, so you can fit the trace on the screen, but also have the trace big enough that you can see it [too low and you just get a line]
e. Horizontal sensitivity:

g. AC-GND-DC switch:
h. Beam finder: useful if the trace is offscreen
i. Calibrate switches: useful so you can calibrate the scope, so redings from the screen can be given specific values, not just relative ones
j. Internal sync: simplest way of triggering trace
k. Trigger section: sometimes you want to trigger the trace in different ways - such as peak voltage on the input, zero voltage, or according to what some other input is doing
I. External trigger input: see k
m. Input resistance and capacitance: ideally the input resistance would be infinite [so it draws no current therefore disrupting the circuit you are measuring not at all] and the capacitance zero, but in reality no perfect electronics are available
n. Probe: the thing you put to the circuit you are testing. Some probes are just pointy wires with handles, other probes have more functionality.
