Lead-checking test question...?
I recently read an article which mentioned a lead-checking test kit by Hybrivet Systems, Inc.
They sell home testing kits for discovering the presense of many chemicals - lead, mercury, cadium, etc.
Does anyone have experience with these products?
Pro or Con.

i don't have experience with these specific products. however i do have experience with the chemistry used by these products.
All the home kits are color metric test, meaning if the test is positive the swab turns a specific color. This is good for knowing that substance contains either lead, mercury, cadium, etc.. but not the specific amount.
Granted if you found lead on a kid's toy, no matter what the concentration is you wouldn't let your child have the toy.
So the positive is you know exactly if the product contains the metal, but not how much.
The con about not knowing the concentration, these products aren't very sensitive to low levels. Also these products will be sensitive to metals that have similar chemistry.
Let's take lead for instance. Lead is a group 14 metal on the perodic table. Any metal will have reaction as lead to the test. (it says in the release notes of the product). so if you have a hot water based board heating system, and have all your pipes solder together with tin flux. you'll have a low level of tin in your water, and the test might false positive for lead.
The last problem with the concentration problem is, not all metals are harmful at extremely low concentrations. Lead, mecury definetely are not good at any concentration, but the human body does require some trace metals, and metals like cadmium and chromate aren't really harmful at extremely low concentrations.
It depends on how you use the product, and what you are looking for. They will give you a hit or miss result, from then on out if you do get a positive, you should probably consult a professional.
